Drupal contributor Angie Byron named D7 co-maintainer
Fellow Montrealer Angie "webchick" Byron has been named as the Drupal 7 branch co-maintainer, following the progress made by D6 branch co-maintainer Gábor Hojtsy. Drupal founder Dries Buytaert made the announcement during his keynote speech at Drupalcon Szeged.
I met Angie in June and she is super nice and also brilliant.
End-of-summer cycling distance goal
When I moved to Montreal in May, bringing my bicycle was top priority when it came to packing the van for the move up. It's one thing I was lucky to have in Ottawa 3 years ago, and one thing I missed in Cape Town over the winter (but probably wouldn't be safe riding anyway).
One thing I enjoy about my current line of work is my ability to work from anywhere. Right now this translates into a 100cm commute from my bed to my desk. This also means that I don't have the benefit of a commute that involves any form of physical activity.. not even walking to the Metro. Luckily, my lack of a commute leaves extra time for such activities done for fitness instead of necessity, although one could argue that fitness could still be considered a necessity, given a certain past sporting injury.
Beginning in early June, I started tracking my rides at ryanpalmer.ca/home/trips. Historically I have focused on weight training to satisfy my fitness goals, but this summer would be different. I was strapped for cash, and I had already paid for a gym membership in Charlottetown that wasn't being used. Motivation can be a real issue for me when it comes to cardiovascular exercise, but by tracking my cycling progress I hoped to reach some lofty goal of a 500km summer on the bicycle. Well it looks like this goal will come and go this week, with plenty of biking weather left to push this distance further.
The new goal
There are approximately 10 weeks of "Good" biking weather left this season, and 4 weeks of "OK" biking weather after that. This estimation is totally unscientific, but I do recall cycling to UPEI until the very end of the Fall semester on more than one occasion, so riding until November 1 should not be difficult. This is not to say Montreal has the exact same climate as Charlottetown, but we'll see I guess.
I estimate a 70km weekly average (half on weekends, half mid-week) given past rides this summer, and what I would consider a comfortable pace. At this pace, I should be able to do an additional 700km before November 1, although external factors such as a trip to Toronto and hosting visitors may impact the final total.
1000 is a pretty round number.
